I really am finding The War Papers extremely useful. I’m in January
1945 of the Renate thread. The war is prolonging itself even though it had
looked so near to ending in June 1944. There is a fear that the Nazis will get
nastier. The V2 is being used successfully be the Germans – they’re holding
out. There is a shortage of coal and a shortage of children’s clothes. Germany
is badly bombed. Food is short there.
My character remains ambivalent and I’ve actually started writing
the chapter where she has a breakdown – not comfortable writing.
All of these details and the timing of them I’ve managed to find in The
